Daniel Cormier makes UFC history with victory over Derrick Lewis

Daniel Cormier made history at UFC 230 in NY on Saturday as he became the first fighter to successfully defend a title belt in multiple weight classes after he submitted Derrick Lewis in the second round of their title fight, courtesy of a rear naked choke.

Cormier will be stripped of his light heavyweight title and the 205-pound crown will go to the victor of the Jones-Alexander Gustafsson bout at UFC 232 on December 29 in Las Vegas.

The defending champion, 39, had headed into the bout as strong favorite and with a remarkable 14-fight unbeaten career record at heavyweight.

And why not? This will not go down as one of the best UFC headliners this year, but Cormier will go down as one of the best fighters ever, and there's no question he's on borrowed time. The challenger powered his way to his feet, but the champion stayed sticky and twisted Lewis to the canvas again with another easy single, once again taking up residency in half guard.

He quickly turned his attentions to former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE star Brock Lesnar, with a match in 2019 looming. Part of the appeal of Lewis is he's a man you can never count out, but stylistically he had nothing for Cormier - and Cormier knew it.

While he accepted the matchup against heavy-handed knockout artist Derrick Lewis on extremely short notice, Cormier didn't skip a beat by taking his behemoth opponent down to the ground and snatching a rear naked choke submission to finish the fight in the second round.

"At around 12, 1 o'clock it was to the point where I was kind of singed over and leaning and Bob Cook said, 'If you don't get better then we're going to have to make a decision on whether or not you're going to fight, '" Daniel Cormier stated.

"Here's the deal when it comes to Jones: It's hard for me to really take anything seriously", Cormier said during the UFC post-fight press conference.
