Pompeo And Kim Agree To Second Summit

"I have asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", Trump tweeted on August 24, about two months after his June meeting with Kim Jong Un in Singapore.

Moon expressed hopes that Pompeo's trip and the proposed second meeting between Kim and Trump would make "irreversible, decisive progress in terms of denuclearization as well as the peace process". -North Korea diplomatic contact since the June summit between the leaders of the two countries in Singapore.

North Korea has dismissed that demand - calling it a "fiction" in a commentary after Pompeo's last visit in July - and the US insistence that North Korea's denuclearization come first, leaving talks at a standstill.

Trump will likely be tempted to hold such a summit quickly-and possibly even in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang-to make history and drive headlines, pointing to another success right before the midterm elections. But as of Sunday night, there were few details and no apparent outcome, nor had any early-morning White House tweets on the meeting appeared - indicating that it may not be before Pompeo returns to the USA that more details emerge.

Their meeting took after Pompeo returned from his trip to Pyongyang to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un earlier in the day.

Pompeo was expected to lay the groundwork for a second summit between Kim and Trump during his trip.

Pompeo's fourth trip to North Korea comes after Kim's reaffirmation of his resolve to denuclearize during his third summit with Moon in Pyongyang last month. Instead, they want both sides to take a "phased" approach, in which Pyongyang is rewarded as it takes gradual steps to roll back its nuclear program.

Then there is the reality that Trump's North Korea policy is unsustainable, something Trump himself likely understands . The United States has called for a comprehensive accord and strict enforcement of sanctions on North Korea in the meantime. He said they would develop options, if not finalize, the location and timing of a second Trump-Kim summit.

Later Sunday, Pompeo flew to Seoul where he met South Korean President Moon Jae-in.

The North has accused Washington of making "unilateral and gangster-like" demands on denuclearization and has insisted that sanctions should be lifted before any progress in nuclear talks.

On the flight to Tokyo, Pompeo said his aim was to "develop sufficient trust" between Washington and Pyongyang to inch towards peace.

Kim made a verbal promise to destroy a missile engine testing site and Trump promised to suspend war games with South Korea.

Even within the Trump administration, however, there's "a profoundly skeptical view of the possibility of achieving 'final, fully verified denuclearization of North Korea, '" the stated US goal.

He then held a working dinner meeting with Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha.

Pompeo visited Tokyo on Friday and is also due to travel to Beijing before returning home Monday.

While the USA demands North Korea submit a detailed inventory of its nuclear and missile programs, Pyongyang insists that Washington first provide a security guarantee by declaring an official end to the Korean War before a possible peace treaty is signed.

"This is a busy time diplomatically", said Al Jazeera's McBride.

The North said at last month's inter-Korean summit it's ready to shut down its Nyongbyon nuclear facility if the United States takes reciprocal steps.
