No Plans to Fire Rosenstein; 'Great' Meeting on Air Force One

There has been widespread speculation that Trump might fire Rosenstein, a frequent target of Trump's tweeted criticism, after a New York Times report that he had made remarks about Trump's fitness for office and offered to tape record conversations with him.

Gidley later issued a readout of the meeting: "They discussed various topics including the International Chiefs of Police event later today, support for our great law enforcement officials, border security, how to better address violent crime in Chicago, and general DOJ business".

Trump's visit to the City Beautiful came days after a U.S. Senate Committee voted to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

"It works, and it was meant for problems like Chicago", Trump said. The official who described Rosenstein's plans was not authorized to speak publicly about the trip and requested anonymity.

Rosenstein has denied the September 21 New York Times report as "inaccurate and factually incorrect".

"No I don't, no", Trump told reporters on Monday morning when asked if he had plans to fire the No 2 justice department official, adding that he has a "very good relationship" with Rosenstein. But when he showed up at the White House last Monday to meet with Kelly, he left the meeting unscathed. As he walked out of the executive mansion that day, Kelly made sure to join him and shook his hand in view of photographers.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's work been overseen by Rosenstein since Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from the investigation.

Sen. Ron Wyden, R-Ore., said recently that if Trump fires Rosenstein "for the objective of protecting himself from the Mueller investigation, that would represent high crimes and misdemeanors". But if he changes his mind, advisers have urged Trump to wait until after the November midterm elections.

But even as Trump has chose to leave Rosenstein in place - for now - the matter of what Rosenstein said and proposed doing likely will remain a political issues heading into the homestretch of the midterms - and beyond.

Besides the meeting with Trump, Rosenstein has also agreed to a private meeting with House Republicans who want to question him about his reported statements on the president.

"Just look at what is now being exposed in the Department of Justice and the FBI", Trump had said at a rally, "look at what's going on". Unlike many other news organizations, we have not put up a paywall.
