Man arrested on suspicion of trying to steal Magna Carta

A man tried to steal the Magna Carta, an 800-year-old document that first established that there are limits on the power of kings, from Salisbury Cathedral on Thursday.

"Shortly before 5pm yesterday alarms were activated at Salisbury Cathedral after an attempt was made to smash the glass box surrounding the Magna Carta".

The authorities have called on witnesses to report to the police with any information on the incident.

A 45-year-old man matching a witness description was taken into custody for alleged attempted theft, possession of a weapon and causing criminal damage.

Police say the Magna Carta was not damaged and no-one was hurt during the incident.

The small English cathedral city of Salisbury at the center of an global investigation into the Novichok poisonings is once again in the spotlight.

Latin for Great Charter - is considered the founding document of English law and civil liberties, a document that influenced the shapers of the U.S. Constitution.

The document of reforms was agreed to by King John at Runnymeade, near Windsor, during a time of political crisis in Medieval England.

The edition at Salisbury Cathedral is one of only four copies of the original 1215 charter still in existence.

In a statement, Salisbury Cathedral said it was thankful "to all who dealt with the situation so swiftly and effectively", adding that their copy of the Magna Carta will not be available to visitors "for the time being" but that it will be back on display as soon as possible.
