Breaches to Russian-Turkish demilitarized zone deal in Syria reported

The drones that attacked Russia's Khmeymim airbase in Syria were operated from the U.S. Poseidon-8 reconnaissance plane, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Colonel General Alexander Fomin said.

The drones were not controlled by some "sort of peasant, but a proper Poseidon-8 equipped with modern manually steered the drones", Fomin added. "It undertook manual control".

According to him, when the drones have encountered the action of the Russian system of jamming, they moved to the manual control mode.

As previously reported in the defense Ministry, January 6 militants in Syria for the first time massively used unmanned aerial vehicles in an attack on the Russian base Hamim and the item of material support of the fleet in Tartus.

Peskov said he can not rule out that the incident may be discussed at the forthcoming meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump preliminarily scheduled to take place in Paris on November 11.

Asked about Fomin's statement, Russian President Vladimir Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the information was "very troubling".

The Russian military has maintained a hotline with the prevent clashes and other incidents between Russian and USA forces in Syria.

Immediately following the incident, Russia's Defense Ministry displayed a pair of drones that it said were captured following the attack on the Khmeimim base, saying the attack required know-how indicating it was carried out with outside assistance.
