Apple Announces the New Mac Mini

Apple refers to its new Mac mini as "part racehorse".

Looking the same as the existing model but in black, the Mac Mini is the easy way to get Mac functionality without needing a built-in desktop model, such as the iMac.

That aside, Apple Malaysia's official website now offers two "base" configurations of the new Mac mini (customisable). The $799 base model sports a 3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i3 processor, though users can configure the same machine up to a 3.2GHz 6-core Intel Core i7 (with Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz), 8GB of 2666MHz RAM (with configuration options of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB), 128GB of SSD storage (options of 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB). It comes with Gigabit or 10 Gb Ethernet, four Thunderbolt 3 ports, HDMI, two USB-A ports, and audio out.

Apple announced a new Mac mini desktop at its event today, detailing an updated model that packs more performance and features into the same chassis size.

The new Mac Mini now maxes out at 64 GB at 2,666 MHz (SO-DIMMS).

The 2018 Mac mini isn't the only the device that saw a price increase with substantial maxed out rates.

If you are interested in buying a new MacBook Air, they are priced from $1,199 / £1,199 and will ship from 6 November. The Mac mini like its laptop cousin is also the first in its series to be made out of 100 percent recycled aluminium that gives it a smaller carbon footprint - almost 50 percent less than the previous generation.

The Mac mini 2018 ditches standard hard drives for SSDs, offering up to 2TB of super-fast storage space, which will make opening and editing large files and complex apps faster than ever. Apple has also baked in its T2 Security Chip which enables on-the-fly data encryption and ensures that software loaded during the boot process hasn't been compromised. In all, the upgrades delver up to 5x processing power, and up to 60 per cent faster graphics. This is an update that was a long time coming, but it seems the wait was worth it. Despite all the hardware that's packed into this enclosure, the external dimensions remain the same as the old Mini.
