Serena Williams & Billie-Jean King's tennis sexism claims dismissed by Jamie Murray

Serena Williams & Billie-Jean King's tennis sexism claims dismissed by Jamie Murray

Thank you, Serena Williams, for calling out this double standard.

The Japanese player's breakthrough triumph in NY was overshadowed by an explosive row between her opponent Williams and umpire Carlos Ramos which resulted in the 23-times Grand Slam champion being docked a game and fined $17,000.

From what I understand, this is fairly common practice, but still illegal, so the Umpire was well within his rights to call it. "It was never a financially motivated decision nor were we ever swayed either way by any national federation".

Serena was handed a warning for a coaching violation before being deducted a point for smashing her racquet.

But after returning to Japan on Thursday, Osaka insisted there were no hard feelings towards Williams, who branded umpire Carlos Ramos a "thief" in an astonishing tantrum triggered by a code violation for coaching that culminated in a docked game.

"He said he made a motion, I don't understand what he was talking about".

The entire exchange led to an awkward moment in Queens as fans boo'd non-stop after Osaka's historic win.

Discussing the incident on Australian television show The Sunday Project, the 23-time Grand Slam champion asserted she did not receive help from coach Patrick Mouratoglou during her defeat to Naomi Osaka. "She said was proud of me and to know the crowd weren't booing at me".

"This week has been a dream come to life, and I'm so honoured to represent Japan and Nissan on the world stage", Osaka said.

Britain's Jamie Murray has rejected claims of men being treated more leniently than women by umpires.

Smith explains why he thinks Serena Williams was in the wrong during Saturday's controversial loss to Naomi Osaka in the US Open final.

There were messages of support for Serena, as well as those condemning her behavior and agreeing with the umpire's calls.

Ramos was due to officiate on Friday in the Davis Cup match between Croatia and the United States in Zadar.

Meanwhile, women's champion and long-time advocate of gender equality in sport Billie King said that while Williams' outburst was "out of line" she felt the umpire would have behaved differently had she been a man. When a man does the same, he's "outspoken" and there are no repercussions.

We need to forget about it because Williams has achieved so much.
