Nadal survives five set epic at US Open

Thiem came out swinging, and connecting; he hit five aces, 13 winners, and handed Nadal a rare bagel in the first set.

He didn't cast his eyes toward the support team in his box, or send his racquets out to be restrung.

"I'm very, very sorry", Nadal revealed he'd said to Thiem as they embraced.

"I'm so happy to reach another semi-finals in my favourite tournament", del Potro said in his on-court interview. "I needed to move forward, to change that dynamic, and I did. The only truth is that you have to do things better to be able to fight for the point and fight for the match".

Rafael Nadal outlasted Dominic Thiem in an epic five-setter that lasted almost five hours and didn't finish until after 2 a.m. local time.

"It was a very tough start and then I tried to stay in the match in some way in that second set and I did. He made one more point than me".

Rafael Nadal acknowledged he was fortunate to claim a thrilling US Open quarter-final victory over Dominic Thiem, who he conceded did everything possible to claim victory.

"I am very sorry for Dominic, he's a close friend on tour, a great guy and a great player".

"He has plenty of time to win big tournaments and has everything". He's a fighter. He has a great attitude.

In a dramatic final set, Nadal saw five break points come and go before Thiem went long with a smash on the first match point.

"I am the guy to look at myself".

Thiem had Nadal on the ropes, breaking him for 4-3 and then easily closing out his next service game.

Most players would have been left deflated after falling behind in such a manner but Thiem was not in that category - the former world number four raising his game another level to take out the tie-break, having surrendered 3-1 and 4-2 leads against Nadal, who saved six break points in the set.

"The way it ended up in the fifth set tiebreaker, from there it's 50-50".

Del Potro's victory was no walk in the park either, the Argentinian battling through strength-sapping heat and humidity to win 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 7-6 (7/4) 6-2.

The semi-final will pit Nadal against third seed Juan Martin del Potro for the second successive Grand Slam. "I mean, it's cruel sometimes tennis, because I think this match didn't really deserve a loser".
