Interestingly, the brand says the digital mirrors are shaped to "resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow".

Some new features touted by automakers ventually turn out to be novelties that never make it into production, but one feature manufacturers have been putting on their concepts for decades that hasn't gone away is now making it into production on the recently redesigned 2019 Lexus ES. In addition, the view of areas around the auto can be manually enhanced by the driver. At this time, the Digital Outer Mirrors will only be available in Japan.

The digital mirror system is created to automatically enhance the corresponding area that the driver is viewing be it left, right, or behind the vehicle when the turn signals are activated or when the auto is in reverse. In addition to providing an expanded view and better visibility at night and in poor weather, these digital systems can help yield better fuel efficiency due to the more aerodynamic design of the camera setup. Wind noise has also been reduced, resulting in a quieter cabin.
