Justin Trudeau says Canadians are tough negotiators

"(Trudeau's) tariffs are too high and he doesn't seem to want to move".

"That's the mother lode. That's the big one", Trump explained.

Fox Business reporter Susan Lee asked Trump in a press conference at the United Nations General Assembly in NY.

He added: "We're very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada".

Trudeau and Trump were captured on camera briefly shaking hands on Tuesday during a luncheon for world leaders.

US President Donald Trump said he rejected Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's request for a meeting during the UN General Assembly this week.

A spokesperson for Trudeau, however, said this was not true and that Trudeau never sought a meeting with Trump during the NY gathering.

Trudeau said existing US tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum in late May would have to be scrapped before Canada felt comfortable signing a new NAFTA.

Well it could mean a US-Canada trade spat, auto tariffs and other problems.

Trump's comments on Wednesday made it clear he wasn't expecting any breakthrough in the coming days.

Earlier Wednesday, Canada's USA envoy David MacNaughton, who has taken part in the Washington talks alongside Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, pegged the likelihood of a new trade deal by Sunday's congressional deadline at a "five" on a scale of one to 10. A number of lawmakers from both parties have pleaded with the White House to try to ensure Canada remains in the talks.

Trump cited dairy as a sticking point, but Yussuff said the Canadians needs a guarantee it won't be hit with new tariffs if they sign a deal. "We don't like their representative very much", he said. The president said it would be called "USM", for the US and Mexico, instead of "USMC", and offered blunt criticism of the Canadian team engaged in the talks. "Very bad for us", said Trump, who refused to use the name NAFTA for a new deal.

"With Mexico, we're not going to say: "No deal" because of Canada", Lighthizer said. "We will put billions and billions of dollars into our Treasury". "I refuse to use it".

Canada, which sends 75 percent of its goods exports to the United States, is vulnerable.

Speaking to reporters this morning in Ottawa, Trudeau disputed Trump's statement - insisting Canada did not request a meeting with the president this week.

"Yeah, I did", Trump said when asked whether he rejected a meeting with Trudeau on the renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
