Israel Warns Russia Over 'Dangers' Of Supplying Syria With Advanced Air Defenses

Moscow says Israeli F-16 planes which struck Latakia in western Syria on September 17 later used the landing Russian Il-20 surveillance plane as 'cover, ' which resulted in the larger Il-20 being hit by a Syrian missile.

23, 2018, has renewed its accusations against Israel for causing the downing of a Russian military plane over Syria.

"We will continue to act to prevent Iranian military entrenchment in Syria and we will continue the military coordination between the IDF (Israel Defence Forces) and the Russian army", Netanyahu told reporters before boarding a flight to NY, where he will address the U.N. General Assembly.

Command posts of the Syrian air defense will also be equipped with Russian automated systems, which guarantee the identification of Russian aircraft, the defense chief stated. Putin says "a chain of tragic circumstances" is to be blamed for a Russian military aircraft shot down by a Syrian missile.

"We are convinced that these measures will calm down some hotheads and keep them from careless actions which pose a threat to our troops", Mr Shoigu said.

"Since the tragic events in the Syrian skies, I have spoken twice with President Putin, expressing deep sorrow about the loss of lives of the Russian Federation crew on the plane, that was irresponsibly shot down by Syrian fire", Netanyahu said. "The aggression against Syria is directed towards the forces that are fighting against terrorism in Syria".

"A modern S-300 air defence missile system will be transferred to the Syrian armed forces within two weeks", he said.

Addressing the Russian Defense Ministry's announcement on S-300 supplies to Syria, Vladimir Ermakov, Director of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that any state had the inalienable right to provide defense industry assistance to its partners.

For its part, Israel is wary of Iran's growing influence in Syria, which is bringing its archenemy closer to its borders. One former military official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that US pilots had several incidents over the years where Syrian systems would launch missiles as they were flying overhead, but nothing came close to hitting a USA jet.

When asked whether the death of 15 Russian soldiers played a role in Moscow's decision, Abboud said the casualties were an "opportunity to impose the limit".

"According to information of our military experts, the reason [behind the downing] was premeditated actions by Israeli pilots which certainly can not but harm our relations", Peskov told journalists.

Meanwhile, in northwestern Syria, preparations were underway to set up a demilitarized zone around the rebel-held province of Idlib, the last major area controlled by a mix of Turkey-backed opposition fighters and other insurgent groups, including al-Qaida-linked militants.

"You know that Israel and the Russian Federation have quite advanced relations". "This compelled us to take reasonable measures in response, meant to improve the safety of Russian soldiers".

A spokesperson for the Israeli army on Monday declined to comment on Moscow's S-300 delivery.

Idlib, controlled by a mix of radical groups and Turkey-backed armed opposition, overlooks the Syrian coast where Russian Federation military and airbases are located, and have reportedly come under rebel fire.
