In primary stunner, Pressley unseats incumbent Rep. Capuano

Pressley won the Democratic nomination for Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, defeating Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano to become the first African-American woman in this position in the history of MA.

Ayanna Pressley beat Rep. Michael Capuano (D-Mass.) in the state's 7th Congressional District in a historic upset.

Pressley is poised to become the first African-American woman to represent MA in the state's congressional history. Capuano - along with the entire MA congressional delegation - supports the "Blue Lives Matter" bill, making assaulting a police officer a federal crime.

Democrats need to pick up 23 seats to take a majority in the House of Representatives, and two to take control of the Senate, if they are to serve as an effective foil to Trump's agenda. Her opponent seemed to have the money and the loyalty of a popular incumbent. In making his concession remarks, Capuano told his campaign team, "I will tell you Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and I will tell you that MA is going to be well served".

Pressley has always been identified as a rising star in the Democratic Party.

In his concession speech, Capuano said the district was clearly upset with the status quo and that he shared those feelings.

Pressley is backed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the leftist socialist who defeated Crowley in NY on a message of pushing to "Abolish ICE".

In a recent interview at Tacos El Paso, a Mexican restaurant in Everett, she said she'd long idolized Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan, pioneering Democrats who were among the first black women in Congress.

The Dorchester resident Carla Monteiro, 35, voted for Pressley because, she said, she felt a strong connection to her history, and felt Pressley had a record of making change.

She is expected to coast to victory in November as there is no Republican on the ballot.

"Change is coming and the future belongs to all of us", Pressley told wildly cheering supporters Tuesday night. After working as a staffer for Senator John Kerry and Rep. Joe Kennedy, and becoming the first black woman elected to Boston City Council, Pressley was given a "rising star" award by Democrat activist group EMILY's List in 2015, speaking at the group's gala awards ceremony alongside then-presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton. She ran on a platform of abolishing ICE-that's the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency-and speaking for prisoners behind bars.

"We won, we won", Pressley says, as she is hugged by numerous people around her.

Democrats need to pick up 23 seats in the House of Representatives and two in the Senate nationwide in the November 6 general election to gain a majority that could allow them to counter Republican President Donald Trump's agenda.
