Amber Guyger, the Dallas Police Department officer who shot and killed Botham Jean in Jean's apartment a little over two weeks ago, has been fired.

Guyger told investigators that she shot 26-year-old Botham Jean on September 6 after she mistakenly entered what she believed was her apartment in the same complex and saw someone she thought was a burglar.

When she put her key in the apartment door, which was unlocked and slightly ajar, it opened, the affidavit said. A statement released by the Dallas Police Department informs that shooting took place at 10 PM local time. When she opened the door, she saw the interior was almost completely dark, according to the affidavit.

The decision to fire Guyger came after an internal review, which Guyger can appeal the decision, police said. Her trial on manslaughter charges is expected to start next month. Its conclusions were discussed during a hearing on Monday, and "Officer Guyger was terminated for her actions".

Attorneys for Jean's family, along with protesters, have been calling for Guyger, a four-year veteran of the force, to be fired since the shooting.

Chief of the Dallas Police Department, U. Reneé Hall recently released a statement stating her decision to terminate Guyger.

As KERA has reported, lawyers for the victim's family say Guyger's version of events "contradicts accounts from neighbors in the apartment complex".

Guyger told police that she concluded her apartment was being burglarized and gave verbal commands to the figure, which ignored them.

This portrait provided by Harding University in Searcy, Ark., shows Botham Jean. "The Ranger investigation hasn't given us much hope". When an officer has been arrested for a crime, adverse conduct is often cited in the officer's termination, he said. She turned on the lights while on the phone with 911, and only when asked for her address did she realize she was in the wrong apartment, she told police. Moments after, Jean was pronounced dead.

Mr Jean grew up on the Caribbean island of St Lucia and went on to work for the professional services giant PricewaterhouseCoopers. She then drew her weapon and fired twice, the affidavit said. Her attorneys have said she has been in hiding since.
