Cristiano Ronaldo: Champions League Forward of the Season

Cristiano Ronaldo: Champions League Forward of the Season

Luka Modric edged out Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's Mohamed Salah to win player of the year, while Ronaldo beat out Lionel Messi to win top forward.

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to return to former home Manchester United with Juventus in the group stage of the Champions League which was finalised on August 30, but that isn't the main talking point.

Ronaldo, who was not in Monaco despite being nominated for an individual award, spent six years at United, winning the Champions League in 2008, before moving to Real Madrid in 2009.

The 33-year-old, now with Juventus, enjoyed yet another exceptional campaign for Real Madrid in 2017/18.

"This is not the victor, he's (Modric) the best player in the world in his position", said Mendes.

He also led his national team to the final of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation losing to France in the final.

However, the English teams have been a total disappointment considering the English Premier League is often reckoned as the most competitive league in Europe.

"I expected a hard group, we have a hard group and that's what the Champions League is all about, " Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp said.

"Yesterday he (Ronaldo) was very angry, and it's only normal", said Allegri.

"His absence is a personal and private choice that has nothing to do with Juventus and must be respected", the Juventus director said.

The first round of Champions League group matches take place on September 18 and 19, with the final to be held at Atletico Madrid's Wanda Metropolitano Stadium on June 1.

Ronaldo's agent, Jorge Mendes, also branded the decision to give the award to Modric as "shameful".

Paul Pogba will also go up against his former team as United and Juve were drawn alongside Young Boys and Valencia, with the Spanish club tipped to cause some problems.
