Westminster crash: Counter-terror police lead investigation - what we know so far

Police in London say a man crashed a auto into a group of pedestrians and cyclists before hitting a set of barriers outside of Britain's Houses of Parliament on Tuesday, causing a number of injuries.

A "number of pedestrians" were injured when a vehicle crashed into barriers outside Britain's Houses of Parliament, with armed police swooping in to arrest the driver, Scotland Yard said.

He was detained at the scene on suspicion of preparing acts of terrorism and was subsequently further arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Mr Basu added no other suspects have been identified and there is "no intelligence at this time of further danger" to Londoners.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said two people were treated at the scene "for injuries that are not believed to be serious" and they have been taken to hospital.

The area is in lockdown after armed police swarmed the scene on Tuesday morning (local time).

Eyewitness Ewelina Ochab told The Associated Press that the crash appeared deliberate.

Mahmood said he had heard that Khater was not a worshiper at the mosque and had shown no signs of radicalisation. A police officer can be seen jumping over another barrier to get out of the way.

Police earlier said they had shut Westminster subway station and cleared out hundreds of commuters.

Authorities said Tuesday that they would deal with Khater's actions as terrorism, given their seemingly deliberate nature, as well as the location and method Khater employed.

Armed police swooped into the area after the incident was reported at 7:37 a.m., arresting the vehicle driver and cordoning off streets surrounding the heart of Britain's government.

"It didn't look like an accident".

The attack left five people dead and around 50 injured, and only ended when police shot Masood dead.

Masood abandoned his vehicle then stabbed and killed unarmed Pc Keith Palmer before he was shot by armed police in a courtyard outside Parliament.
