UEFA reveals shortlist for best player award

The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, on Monday announced the names of the three nominees shortlisted for the 2017/18 UEFA Men's Player of the Year Awards. Modric and Ronaldo sharing a team could make it hard to evaluate their La Liga play, while Salah's World Cup struggles may be outweighed by his dominant appearance in the Premier League.

Three shortlisted maestros for this year's run are Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric, and Mohamed Salah.

Ronaldo scored 44 times in all competitions for Real Madrid last season, albeit in ten games fewer than Messi and it's the fifteen goals in thirteen Champions League matches that sets the pair apart.

Ronaldo had a mixed campaign by his own high standards last term, despite finishing top of the Champions League scoring charts with 15 goals. Modric, who has been winning hearts at Bernabeu with his top-notch performances also stands tall as the runner-up at FIFA World Cup and the best player of the megaevent as well.

Modric, also part of Madrid's Champions League winning team, finished runner-up with Croatia at the World Cup, winning the best player award at the tournament in Russian Federation.

Similar to the aforementioned Ronaldo, the 32-year-old midfielder also made in excess of 40 appearances last season as Real Madrid went on to lift the UEFA Champions League trophy. And the thing which can't be taken away from the headlines is Lionel Messi misses out from the worthy nominations.

The victor of the men's and women's prizes will be announced at the draw for the Champions League group stage on August 30.

Messi, whose Barcelona side crashed out of the UEFA Champions League to Roma in the quarterfinal, could not secure points ahead of the trio.
