Tropical storm watch issued for Hawaii Island

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says Tropical Storm John is expected to strengthen rapidly and become a hurricane by Monday afternoon and a major hurricane by Tuesday. Mexican officials discontinued a hurricane watch from Punta San Telmo in Michoacan state to Playa Perula in Jalisco state, though Ileana still could cause heavy surf and rains in that area. The storm traffic for the rest of the season, which ends officially on November 30, won't be almost as robust, Philip Klotzbach, hurricane specialist at Colorado State University, which pioneered long-range tropical storm forecasting, said last week. Hurricane Hector, left, can be seen heading west toward Hawaii.

The NHC issued a tropical storm warning Wednesday for Hawaii County, and the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency advised residents to prepare an emergency kit that includes at least a 14-day supply of food, water and other necessities.

Still, the initial field forensic review indicated the "remains are what North Korea said they were", Byrd said. Most of the remains returned to the USA were from the village of Sinheung Ri, near the Chosin Reservoir.

As of 5 p.m. today, the center of Hector was located about 360 miles east-southeast of Hilo, packing maximum sustained winds of 130 miles an hour with higher gusts. Tropical Storm Ileana also is growing while racing John up the coastline and is forecast to reach hurricane strength later Monday. Subtropical storms usually have winds that are spread out farther from the center, and they are often asymmetric. The long-term seasonal averages are 11 named storms, and six hurricanes. All these conditions tend to be associated with quieter Atlantic hurricane season. Debby poses no threat to land, the hurricane center said.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will release its updated mid-season hurricane forecast on Thursday.
