Hurricane Lane's eye seen in dramatic video as storm churns toward Hawaii

A watch is typically issued 48 hours before the anticipated first occurrence of tropical-storm-force winds, conditions that make outside preparations hard or unsafe.

The central Pacific gets fewer hurricanes than other regions.

Hurricane Lane is a Category 5 storm on Wednesday morning.

More hurricane watches were expected to be issued for other Hawaiian islands, said the Honolulu-based hurricane center.

In addition to strong winds, the primary threats will be rough surf, coastal erosion and heavy rainfall, even if the center of the storm does not move directly over the islands.

The forecast track will likely change some over the coming days as Lane interacts with the surrounding atmosphere and the impact from the friction that is caused as Lane nears the islands, namely the Big Island's mountains.

The path for Hurricane Lane will take it close to Honolulu by Friday.

The latest track from the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has just about all the island chain inside the "Cone of Uncertainty". It's possible Oahu and Kauai may later be included in a weather service advisory for the hurricane.

Part of the reason hurricanes are rare in Hawaii is that the state presents a pretty small target in a very big ocean.

Longtime Hawaii residents were reminded of the destruction caused by Hurricane Iniki in 1992, which according to Hawaii News Now, made landfall on Kauai island in September of that year as a Category 4 storm with 145 miles per hour winds. "But I remember the wind being the strongest force of nature I've ever witnessed and probably the scariest sounds I've ever heard in my life", resident Mike Miranda, who was 12 years old in 1992, told the Associated Press.
