Hundreds Of Newspapers Are Challenging Trump's Attacks: 'We Are Not The Enemy’

The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution on Thursday, rebuking President Donald Trump's statement that the news media is "the enemy of the people".

The same morning, the president tweeted that the "fake news media" is the "opposition party".

Earlier, newsrooms across the U.S. hit out against Trump with a co-ordinated series of editorials condemning his attacks on "fake news" and his suggestions that journalists are the enemy.

In a second tweet, Trump singled out The Boston Globe, which published a compilation of the editorials from the various media outlets across the country, defending freedom of the press.

"Trump quipped that reporters had the "freedom of the press" to decide whether or not to attend the remainder of the Cabinet briefing, offering them a chance to stay for the full meeting".

"Criticizing the news media - for underplaying or overplaying stories, for getting something wrong - is entirely right".

Despite Trump's rhetoric, he claimed to be a supporter of freedom of the press. "But insisting that truths you don't like are "fake news" is unsafe to the lifeblood of democracy".

Trump, while pushing back against the coordinated editorials against him, alleged much of what they said were fake news ad accused them of pushing a political agenda or trying to hurt people. They also wrote that it is "un-American" and "dangerous" to label the media the enemy of the people.

Each paper ran an editorial, which is usually an unsigned article that reflects the opinion of an editorial board and is separate from the news and other sections in a paper.

"The people who read editorials don't need to be convinced", he said.

"It's not that we disagree with concerns about the president's language in speeches and on social media", the Capital Gazette Editorial Board wrote.

"We're just not coordinating with other news organizations because the president's opinion, frankly, is just not that important to us".

Not all newspapers have taken part in the editorial response, however.

"For more than two centuries, this foundational American principle has protected journalists at home and served as a model for free nations overseas".

"It will provide Trump with the circumstantial evidence of the existence of a national press cabal that has been convened exclusively to opposes him", he said.

But the newspaper said it would "continue to speak out against this president's war on the free press", doing it "in our own way, on our own timetable".
