United Nations says displaced Syrians leave zone near Jordan border crossing

Residents of the northern areas have told ANSA by phone they heard a clear shelling near the border region and residents of Jordan's northern city of Ramtha felt tremor in their homes due to the intense shelling. A soldier could be seen hoisting the Syrian flag atop a watchtower.

Daraa has a symbolic significance as it was the birthplace of the Syrian war that erupted in 2011. Both Damascus and Amman have long eyed a resumption of worldwide trade, a Jordanian military official told BBC Arabic in 2016.

One officer told the TV that troops have taken up positions along the border with Jordan and are removing illegal crossing points. A war monitor said that the regime now controls about 70 percent of Daraa province.

On Saturday, several rebel factions put out a statement saying they did not accept the ceasefire deal and would continue fighting.

"An agreement has been reached between the Syrian government and the terrorist groups" that includes "the handover of heavy and medium weapons in all cities and towns", the official SANA news agency said.

Ahead of the crisis, the crossing was the busiest border crossing in Syria as it is situated on the Damascus-Amman worldwide highway near Nasib.

As the sun set on Friday, a large convoy of armoured vehicles and tanks flying Russian and Syrian flags made its way towards the Nasib-Jaber border crossing overlooking Jordan.

The crossing is important for Jordan now that the country is suffering from economic obstacles, which led to the eruption of protests in June, leading to the government's sacking.

Jordan said on Thursday it had succeeded in persuading the Syrian opposition and the Russian side to meet again in an effort to reach a ceasefire and a political solution.

Reopening the crossing, a vital trade artery which has been in rebel hands since 2015, is a major objective of the Syrian government campaign that aims to recover the entire southwestern corner of Syria from rebel foes of President Bashar al-Assad.

Once completed, this effectively ends the rebellion across southern Syria.

Abazeed said the preliminary deal also provided for the safe transfer of at least 6,000 people, including rebels and civilians, to the northwestern province of Idlib.

Weakened by a crushing government offensive backed by Russian Federation and abandoned by their US allies, rebels in southern Syria found themselves compelled to accept yet another humiliating surrender deal that would see opposition fighters transported by buses to areas held by rebels in the country's north. Fighting between pro-Syrian government forces and opposition militia has been intensifying for weeks across Dara'a Governorate, close to the Jordanian border, as well as the Golan Heights border area with Israel.

But even amongst rebels who have agreed to Friday's deal it is unclear precisely how the terms of the deal will unfold in the coming days.

A rebel spokesman and the United Kingdom -based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Russian military police.
