Trump warns Turkey of sanctions if US pastor not freed

In a tweet, Trump called Brunson "a great Christian, family man and wonderful human being" and demanded his immediate release.

President Donald Trump says the US will hit Turkey with "large sanctions" over a American pastor detained on terror and espionage charges, and he called for the pastor's immediate release.

"The government of Turkey continues to make a mockery of justice in its treatment of Pastor Brunson", said Kristina Arriaga, vice chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, in response to the ruling.

"He is suffering greatly", Trump said of 50-year-old pastor Andrew Brunson.

A Turkish court ruled on Wednesday that an American pastor be transferred from jail to house arrest, his lawyer said, after almost two years in detention on terrorism charges in a case which has strained ties between Ankara and Washington.

Brunson's move to house arrest comes amid growing tensions between the USA and its fellow North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey.

Turkish prosecutors are demanding up to 35 years of imprisonment: 15 years for committing crimes on behalf of terrorist organisations as a non-member, and up to 20 years for political or military espionage. Cavusoglu said on Tuesday that Turkish authorities had conveyed the message to a delegation of US Treasury and State Department officials during a visit to Ankara last week.

Finland Is Natural Choice for Trump-Putin Meeting
Speaking in Britain before the indictments were unveiled, Trump said he would ask Putin about the allegations of election meddling. "I will absolutely bring that up".

"With regard to the Brunson case, necessary information has been provided to our US counterparts on various occasions and it has been clearly expressed that this issue is totally within the competence of the independent Turkish judiciary", Aksoy told the agency.

Turkish prosecutors are seeking a 35-year jail term for Brunson.

Turkey wants the USA to agree to his extradition.

He was an ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan until their 2013 public falling-out led the government to declare Gulen's network a terror group. Erdemir continued, "Such a dirty deal would not only be a de facto admission of the moral equivalency between an innocent pastor and a sanctions buster, but also lend legitimacy to the ludicrous accusations in the Brunson indictment".

The United States has long used bases in Turkey for operations across the Middle East, but relations have been strained by Washington's support for Kurdish fighters in Syria. Gulen denies any involvement in the coup, in which at least 250 people were killed.

"This is one example of why religious freedom matters, and so we're going to have over 80 delegations here at the State Department in a handful of days, 40 of my counterparts, foreign ministers", Pompeo said in the interview.

At the end of a recent hearing, the court inside a prison complex in western Turkey rejected Brunson lawyer's request that he be freed pending the outcome of the trial.

He added: "With regard to the Brunson case, necessary information has been provided to our USA counterparts on various occasions and it has been clearly expressed that this issue is totally within the competence of the independent Turkish judiciary". "I forgive those who lie and bear false witness against me".
