Trump Releases ‘Very Nice’ Letter From Kim Jong Un

Separately, North Korean officials did not show up at planned talks with the USA on Thursday to discuss repatriating the remains of American soldiers killed during the 1950-53 Korean War.

North Korea has returned the remains of some U.S. soldiers to the United States over the years since 1953, when an armistice halted the Korean War.

The two sides were supposed to meet at 9 a.m.in the border village, but the North Koreans did not show up, according to officials from the government and the United States Forces Korea (USFK).

Kim also voices hope "the invariable trust and confidence in Your Excellency Mr President will be further strengthened in the future process of taking practical actions".

South Korea's Foreign Ministry said North Korean military officials were now seeking a meeting Sunday on repatriating the remains of the war dead, with Pyongyang wanting to discuss the issue with a USA military general.

Coming after a year of Twitter taunts and nuclear brinkmanship, the meeting between Kim and Trump was historic, in that it was the first meeting between a United States president and his North Korean counterpart.

Meanwhile, it is yet to be seen whether North Korea will show up for the talks a day after the scheduled date.

Kim committed to "complete denuclearisation" when he and Trump met in Singapore last month.

Ahead of the summit in Singapore, North Korean officials sometimes did not turn up to meetings where their US counterparts were expecting them, causing tension between the two negotiating partners. It ended with North Korea accusing Mr. Pompeo of having a "gangster-like mindset" and with North Korea reverting to type - bluffing, bullying, and distracting.

Case in point: On Thursday, the US president posted a letter from the North Korean dictator as evidence that "great progress" was being made between the two countries. His top deputy, who took the meeting in Kim's absence, said his boss was out of town without revealing what was more important than a sit-down with the top US diplomat. Pyongyang has asked the UN Command Armistice Commission to upgrade the talks to a higher level to include a US general, South Korea's foreign ministry said. Faced with mid-term elections in November, Trump has no choice but to put the most positive construction on these debacles, and Kim now has China's backing and appears to fear nothing. "Great progress being made". Roughly 5,300 United States troops presumed to have been killed in the Korean war are unaccounted for.

Seoul's Defense Ministry said the allies are now trying to identify some 180 sets of remains, some of which are presumed to be South Korean soldiers.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in said Friday he is confident a diplomatic thaw between Washington and Pyongyang will continue, despite "bumps and bruises" on the path to denuclearising the Korean peninsula.
