Russian intelligence officers indicted for hacking into DNC, Clinton campaign

Twelve Russian intelligence officers have been indicted in connection with the bitcoin-funded hacking of Democratic organizations and the Hillary Clinton campaign "with the intent to interfere" in the 2016 election, officials announced Friday.

The Special Counsel's Office declined to comment Friday as to why the organization that published the documents, the U.S. Congressional candidate who asked for stolen documents and the person who communicated with the conspirators and with the Trump campaign were not charged in the indictment.

Computer records related to at least 500,000 voters were stolen, but no evidence has emerged that the election itself was compromised or that the result was affected.

The charges were announced on Friday by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

And an elections system vendor, VR Systems, which wasn't named in the indictment, repeatedly denied reports in 2017 that information was stolen from it and used to send phishing emails to local elections officials.

Starting in June 2016, they released tens of thousands of these documents using online pseudonyms, such as "Guccifer 2.0" and "DC Leaks". "We need to work together to hold the perpetrators accountable, and keep moving forward to preserve our values, protect against future interference, and defend America", Mr. Rosenstein said.

"The internet allows foreign adversaries to attack Americans in new and unexpected ways", Rosenstein said.

Rosenstein said he briefed the president in advance. Both were created and controlled by the Russian GRU, Rosenstein said.

The Department hasn't alleged if any Trump advisers colluded with Russian Federation to interfere with the presidential campaign.

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", he said.

"In my remarks, I have not identified the victims", Rosenstein said.

The charges were brought as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into whether there was any collusion between Donald Trump's campaign and Russian Federation. The White House didn't respond to a request for further comment on whether Trump would address the indictments when he meets with Putin. He said there's no allegation in the indictment as to whether they actually did affect it, labeling that speculative.

In the most high-profile case related to Mueller's investigation, Paul Manafort, Trump's former campaign chairman, was indicted in October on a host of charges, including conspiracy, money laundering and making false statements to the FBI.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee who has been one of the foremost proponents of the "Russia collusion" theory, persisted with his attacks on the president, telling CNN's Wolf Blitzer that the indictments meant that President Trump should back out of a meeting scheduled with President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday.
