Riders hit by tear gas on Tour de France

Chris Froome's bad day continued after Stage 17 of the Tour de France when he crashed while riding down to his team bus after being mistaken for a fan by police, Team Sky said on Wednesday.

As he went backwards, Thomas stuck on the wheels of Tom Dumoulin and Primoz Roglic - who started the day third and fourth overall - before racing clear in the final few hundred metres to take third place on the day behind Irishman Dan Martin.

Welshman Thomas will start Thursday's 18th stage, a mainly flat 171 km ride from Trie-sur-Blaise to Pau with a 1:59 lead on Sunweb team leader Dumoulin, with Froome in third.

Yellow jersey-bearing Thomas latched onto his wheel immediately as did Primoz Roglic, but four-time Tour victor Froome had no response other than to grit his teeth and stick his tongue out.

Chris Froome has been pulled off his bike by police after a hard 17th stage of the Tour de France which saw him fall further behind teammate Geraint Thomas in the race for the yellow jersey.

"Nairo came with me and went past me".

"Being a cyclist is a really tough job", Prudhomme said.

Valtteri Bottas contract talks only took two weeks
I think we have done a really good job considering certain things that we've faced and what they have brought to different races. The four-time world champion penned a new deal with Mercedes until 2020, when the current set of F1 regulations end.

At one point it looked like going the other way, with Froome following an attack by LottoNL-Jumbo's Roglic midway up the climb, leaving Thomas to sit on the wheel of Dumoulin as the Dutchman worked to shut down the move.

Although he was helped back onto his bike to finish the stage, won by French teammate Julian Alaphilippe, Gilbert emerged from the X-ray truck suffering from his endeavours.

It was the first of three mountainous stages in the Pyrenees before Sunday's conclusion in Paris.

This Tour has been marred by incidents as race organizers struggle to deal with angry fans protesting against Froome's participation.

"I think anybody who knows me knows that wasn't my intension but I was pretty agitated about the attention we were getting".

At the top of the highest climb in this year's Tour de France Chris Froome's wobble made Geraint Thomas's day. "Now, I just have to be happy with the fact that Froome cracked". "It gave me confidence, because if Froomey is suffering then everyone is suffering and I was feeling good", the 32-year-old Welshmansaid.

"It's the first time I've ridden for GC (general classification)".
