President Trump threatens shutdown over wall, immigration

Trump has previously floated the possibility of a government shutdown over border security and immigration, and on Sunday he made his threat explicit, saying he would do so unless Congress funds his proposed wall, which he promised Mexico would pay for, and puts in place his preferred immigration policies.

The president said that Democrats need to get onboard with his immigration agenda, which includes a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, or risk another government shutdown.

Trump's call for a wall, a favorite vow from his 2016 presidential campaign, would likely cost more than $20 billion, but Congress so far has allocated only $1.5 billion for extra border security. "Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc".

US House Speaker Paul Ryan said that $1.6bn had already been agreed on for the wall, and lawmakers were mulling another request for $5bn.

Both chambers will have short window of working days to approve a spending bill before government funding expires.

Displaying his usual belligerent attitude, the President issued a series of demands via his Twitter account, and included his statement showing support for a government shutdown.

Nine Family Members Killed In U.S. Duck Boat Tragedy

In recent months, the president has moved to make immigration far more hard that it already is, including separating families seeking asylum, often shipping children of immigrant parents to separate facilities. "The president, I think, wants us to have policies that work for America and work for Americans, and I think that's what we are going to move forward with".

A bill in the house of representatives would include $5 billion for the border wall but would require Democratic votes in the Senate to pass.

Lawmakers met with Trump last week to discuss the appropriations process to fund the government by the September deadline. Nita Lowey of NY and California's Lucille Roybal-Allard - called the $5 billion a waste that "only further enables this administration's obsession with cruel attacks on immigrants".

That came after U.S. government officials said more than 1,800 children separated at the U.S. -Mexico border have been reunited with parents and sponsors after a federal judge ordered the reunions.

He also said Congress must fix "the DUMBEST & WORST immigration laws anywhere in the world!" and urged voters to "Vote 'R'". Under the Trump administration, however, criminal aliens can refer to anyone who has entered the country without documentation.
