NIU Political Scientist Says No Surprise In Trump's High Court Pick

Trump announced Monday that he would nominate Kavanaugh, a USA appeals court judge, to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court.

New Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh reportedly went deep in debt in order to purchase Washington Nationals tickets, according to the Washington Post. "In law school I learned that no person is above the law". "The stakes are high for the LGBT community".

But McConnell, who met with Kavanaugh in his office, praised him on Tuesday as a "great nominee" who deserves bipartisan support.

Fallon, who is the executive director of Demand Justice, a new group that promotes progressive judicial nominees, said his organization has been working to persuade senators to oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation. "I don't think that's what Donald Trump thinks", Sanders said, arguing that the traditional deference, the tap-dancing around the edges of the nominee's politics, would amount to surrender at this stage.

Senators will be seeking access to Kavanaugh's writings and correspondence, reams of documents that will take weeks to compile and even longer to review, giving opponents ample opportunity to wage a political battle.

What worries NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota director Andrea Ledger is what the Supreme Court could do outside of Roe v. Wade. Judge Kavanaugh got the nomination because he passed this litmus test, not because he'll be an impartial judge on behalf of all Americans.

Coast Guard dispatched planes and a cutter that searched more than 1,630 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico. The large cruise ship is staffed with more than 1,500 crew members and can accommodate almost 4,000 guests.

With the President's announcement, the next hurdle for Kavanaugh will be to gain the U.S. Senate's approval. Should he be confirmed, Kavanaugh makes the Supreme Court solidly conservative, joining Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch providing a five-vote majority.

While Supreme Court nominations are the job of the Senate, House members are also weighing in. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Dianne Feinstein of California.

Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who also met with Kavanaugh, promised a "thorough" but speedy confirmation process.

Sen. John Thune, R-S.D., who heads the Republican conference in the Senate, said he wasn't anxious about defections from Collins and Murkowski. Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case. "If Senate Democrats want to obstruct this immensely qualified judge to appeal to their base, we'll make sure their constituents hold them accountable this November".

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Justice Kennedy, who also spent the majority of his career in public service.
