Trump told the newspaper he had advised May on how to conduct Brexit negotiations, "but she didn't listen to me".

"I guess when they put out blimps to make me feel unwelcome, no reason for me to go to London", Trump told United Kingdom tabloid The Sun in an interview that was published on Thursday, in which he also sharply criticised May's Brexit plans.

But on Friday Trump claimed that The Sun didn't include all his "tremendous" comments about May and explained his about-face by hinting that he had changed his mind on his criticism since speaking with May.

"I'm just saying I think he would be a great prime minister", Trump told The Sun.

Mr. Trump and his wife, first lady Melania Trump were treated to a rendition of the U.S. National Anthem before Mr. Trump and the queen inspect her guard of honor.

Trump said May's so-called soft-Brexit approach went "the opposite way" to what he had recommended and that it was "very unfortunate". He also refused to answer questions from CNN, calling the network "fake", and moved immediately to take a question from Fox News instead.
