‘Blood moon’: How to watch the longest lunar eclipse of the century

The total lunar eclipse, in which the moon will appear red, also called Blood Moon, will be visible from 1 am to 2:43 am tonight.

"Enthusiasts can witness the phenomenon with the naked eye and without any filter", Bharat Kumar of the Breakthrough Science Society (BSS) in Bengaluru said. It's only visible in its entirety from eastern Africa to the Middle East to India.

But, the UK, Portugal, western Spain, Norway, Sweden and western France will only see some of the eclipse phase.

While there are innumerable misnomers and superstitions about the moon and its dark side, including the eclipse's potential impact on the body and mind, none of them have any scientific corroboration till date.

In addition, during Friday's eclipse, the Moon will be at its "apogee" - the point farthest from the Earth. The moon will be close to the horizon, so make sure to look west-south-west.

"If Earth partially blocks the sun, and the darkest part of its shadow falls across the moon's surface, it is called a partial eclipse. The partial eclipse ends at 11.19 p.m.", he said.

Thank you for your feedback.

It means that star gazers hoping to witness the lunar eclipse are likely to be disappointed.

Skywatchers are advised to pick a location with a clear horizon on the south-east in order to maximise their viewing time.

"If you were standing on the moon in this eclipse, you would see the sun and then the earth would come in the way and blot out the sun", said Fabian.

During a total lunar eclipse, the moon takes on its ghostly red pallor because of the Earth's shadow.

Social media is already flooded with excited Europeans exclaiming at the wondrous sight as the glow get brighter and redder ever night, as only red and yellow light can pass through the Earth's atmosphere.

Red light had a better chance of doing so for the same reason the sky was blue - shorter wave-lengths were scattered more efficiently by the molecules in our atmosphere. "People keep referring to it as a "blood moon". The next lunar eclipse of such a length is due in 2123. "It's something that people have heard of before", she said.

The event will not occur in the United Kingdom until 9.21pm, and will last until 10.13pm.

"We should have a coppery red tint on the moon with Mars the "Red Planet" just next to it, very bright and with a slight orange hue itself".

This time, Mars comes the closest to Earth as compared to any time in the last 15 years.

The moon takes about 27 days to orbit Earth and goes through regular phases in a 29.5-day cycle.
