Warmbier parents hope Trump-Kim summit has positive results

But in an extraordinary media conference later, Mr Trump announced details not in the paper.

Trump also said he would like to withdraw troops from South Korea and planned to stop playing "war games" military exercises with the country.

The day began with a historic handshake, the first meeting ever between a sitting US president and a North Korean leader.

Ahead of the summit, Trump had predicted the two men might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days.

The summit centred on nuclear disarmament and reducing tensions.

The agreement said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the United States would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea. Trump committed to provide security guarantees to the DPRK, while Kim reaffirmed his commitment to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Observers say the document lacks substance, in particular on how denuclearisation would be achieved. No other United States president would be so ignorant of diplomacy and global negotiations to give North Korea such a huge propaganda win without getting something tangible in return from Pyongyang.

Paul said he heard it differently, and understood Pence to say that the small-scale exercises that go on all the time will continue but "the main, big war exercises" would not continue as long as there's progress on denuclearization talks.

"We gave more than we got", Coons said.

Trump had said earlier in Singapore that Otto Warmbier was a "very special person" and that his death had galvanized the administration's determination to deal with North Korea.

Nor did it keep Trump from slapping stiff tariffs on imports on European steel and aluminum, a decision taken last week. Trudeau said he would continue to stand up for Canadian dairy producers and the country's supply management system.

"His country does love him", Trump said. "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough". "I said 'boy, look at that view".

There is an array of reaction to President Trump's agreement - which is short and contains no details, timeline or definition for denuclearization. I can commit "to work towards" beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon, but that doesn't mean that I will ever reach the goal. "I think he's going to start now", Trump told ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos.

"We had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", Kim said as he and Trump signed the joint statement, adding, "The world will see a major change".

There was shock, relief, worry, sometimes simultaneously, as the world watched Trump and Kim - who were insulting each other's mental and physical prowess and threatening nuclear war just a few months ago - shaking hands and smiling.

The president, however, said the sanctions on North Korea for its nuclear tests will remain for now.

USA forces in South Korea said it has "received no updated guidance on the execution or cessation of training exercises" and will continue to coordinate with South Korean partners and maintain the current posture until it receives an updated guidance from the Department of Defense or the Indo-Pacific Command.

In the U.S., political opinion is mixed.

"This just feels like a sitcom of some sort, as opposed to having the gravity that this is really about the security of the United States of America", Sherman said on MSNBC. Speaking with Fox News on the North Lawn of the White House, Trump defended his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, saying "they are already starting to produce the remains of these great soldiers". Pence's spokeswoman Alyssa Farah shot back in a tweet that the vice president "didn't say this at the Senate lunch today". It appears that a U.S. administration more interested in the pictures of this historic summit rather than substantive breakthroughs will be just fine with that.

China is North Korea's main economic partner and has always been its key diplomatic ally, but Beijing signed onto the stringent sanctions imposed by the United Nations previous year.

Trump responded that he embracing diplomacy with Kim in hopes of saving as many as 30 million lives.
