Russian Embassy condemns attempt on Zimbabwe president's life

One of those injured from the blast was VP Kembo Mohadi who sustained an injury on the leg but was in high spirits when President Mnangagwa paid him a visit.

Reports reaching the Maravi Post from Harare say Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa survived in a deadly attack on Saturday.

State television says 42 people were injured in the blast, including at one vice president.

Video footage from White City Stadium shows an explosion happening close to the Zimbabwe leader as he exited the stage after addressing supporters at a rally. The July 30 vote is the first without Mugabe since independence in 1980.

They are the first polls since veteran leader Robert Mugabe was ousted following a brief military takeover in November past year.

Also among the VIP injured list was Chiwenga's wife, Mary, cabinet minister Oppah Muchinguri- Kashiri and Zanu PF national commissar Englebert Rugeje.

President Mnangagwa also took time to visit the Zanu- PF Secretary for Women Affairs Cde Mable Chinomona who was also among the injured.

So far the number of people injured is 49 and they are now receiving treatment at Mater Dei Hospital, Mpilo Hospital and United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH).

"I am used to these attempts", Mnangagwa said in his first comments on the explosion in the country's second city of Bulawayo.

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba told local media that there have been "multiple attempts" on Mr Mnangagwa's life over the years.

Without mentioning names, Mnangagwa said there were some people who did not accept his presidency and his "usual enemies" were behind the blast.

The 75-year-old Mnangagwa and 40-year-old Chamisa, the leader of the Movement for Democratic Change are the main contenders.

South African President Cyril Rampahosa condemned the attack and said the regional Southern African Development Community would "evaluate the incident and appropriate steps".
