In South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, Freedom Caucus member Rep. Mark Sanford, R-S.C., is facing a tough primary challenge, perhaps the toughest of his political career.

Before the final results were even tallied, Sanford told supporters, "I've always been a realist and at this point, based on the numbers I see, I think that I will end up losing this election".

With much of the vote counted, state Rep. Katie Arrington was on the cusp of winning outright.

Hours before the polls closed on Tuesday Trump gave a shout out to Arrington, tweeting that "Mark Sanford has been very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA". Scarborough noted that Sanford has said a number of critical statements about Trump in the past, so the MSNBC host flat out asked "Why don't we just say [the GOP] has devolved into a cult?" The refers to 2009, when Sanford's aides said he was hiking the Appalachian Trail while he actually visited a woman with whom he was having an affair in Argentina.

Sanford had never lost a political race in SC, and his defeat Tuesday was an abrupt end to a roller-coaster political career.

The staunchly conservative former governor, who at one time had been considered a potential presidential contender, was defeated in a Republican primary by a first-term state representative who had made fealty to Trump the defining issue in the race.

GOP primary voters continue to reward staunch supporters of the President and punish those who get on his bad side.

. In Alabama, U.S. Rep. Martha Roby is in a July 17 runoff against former congressman Bobby Bright.

Since then, Sanford has accused Trump of fanning "the flames of intolerance", criticized Trump's use of the word "shit-hole" to describe some third world countries, and most recently called the president's plan to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports "an experiment with stupidity".

His loss to Katie Arrington, Sanford told me on Wednesday morning, will send a strong message to other Republicans about the consequences of calling out Trump for his apostasies on the things conservatives claim to hold dear - from fiscal responsibility to free trade.

Governor McMaster obviously very excited about moving on to a runoff for the Republican nomination for governor, "Thank you for coming out.we're just getting started".

Sanford had represented the Charleston district on and off for six terms, with eight years in the Governor's Mansion in between.

A one-time state chairman of President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, Stewart almost won the 2017 Republican nomination for governor, despite being heavily outspent.

He said he hoped his defeat would not dissuade other members from speaking out against Trump. "I'm for ideas that I've long stood for in my entirety of my time in office, '" he said. She needed to win a majority of the vote to avoid a run-off.

He was the top aide to Trump's presidential campaign in Virginia in 2016, but was sacked for staging an unauthorized protest of the Republican National Committee. "He is better off in Argentina".

Nevada also has an interesting governor's race, with six Democrats and seven Republicans vying to run for a position that's been controlled by the GOP for almost 20 years. He says he plans a "vicious" general election campaign against Kaine, who battled Trump as Hillary Clinton's vice-presidential candidate and has a huge fundraising advantage. The woman who beat Mark Sanford that's a major Trumper is a woman. She has served in the Statehouse since 2016.
