Memphis great-grandmother Alice Marie Johnson talked with Local Memphis for the first time since she walked away from a life sentence, thanks to President Donald Trump and Kim Kardashian West.

Johnson, 63, was released after serving 21 years of a life sentence for a first-time nonviolent drug offense and charges of money laundering.

Trump's action comes just days after he met with Kardashian West, at the White House to discuss prison reform.

As for Johnson's next steps, she'll have regular check-ins with her parole officer and is making plans to meet Kardashian West soon.

Christine Samra is a web and social media producer for KPIX 5. "'I know that you have compassion for women like this.' And I explained to her her story, and she immediately got it".

Kardashian West got involved in Johnson's case after she was profiled in a viral Facebook video past year.

It ends Johnson's sentence but does not remove her 1996 conviction. She went on to say that her heart "is so full of gratitude for the attractive inside and out Kim Khardashian West who made a decision to advocate for and essentially save the life of my mother, someone she had never heard of or met!"

In prison Wednesday, she got a call from Kardashian West. Johnson said she allowed others involved in the conspiracy to use her phone and that she also relayed messages for them, but she said she never personally sold drugs.

As clemency petitions work their way through the system, the president routinely denies the "vast majority" of requests, a White House official said.

In 2014, the non-profit Can-Do, who advocates for clemency for non-violent drug offenders, began supporting her case.

Attorney Brittany K. Barnett, another member of Johnson's legal team, thanked Trump in a statement that said, "Life in prison without the possibility of parole screams that a person is beyond hope, beyond redemption".

Trump issued a posthumous pardon to Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion, who was sent to prison a century ago in a racially charged case. Though Johnson said she feels she overpaid her debt for the crime that she committed, she refuses to focus on the past.
