French, German Leaders Urge 'European Response' To Migrant Crisis

German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday to hammer out reforms that can stop the "disintegration" of the European Union, torn by populist forces and deep discord over immigration.

"We want Europe to find its place in a multilateral world, we want Europe to play its role when it comes to defending values and convictions, promoting prosperity, more peace in the world and preserving environment", she said.

President Donald Trump didn't waste any time tweeting about the German situation as a way of bolstering his own controversial border policies, including separating children from their parents at the border and putting them in tent camps.

Merkel and Macron have both stressed that, as US President Donald Trump openly challenges the European Union with a trade war and over security and climate policy, the bloc must learn to stand its ground on the world stage.

"The German people are up in arms against their leaders, while migration weakens the already shaky coalition in Berlin, he wrote on Twitter".

On the same day his name and report came up at the White House, Seehofer was quoted about Chancellor Merkel in the leading German business magazine, Handelsblatt, where he said "he can't work with that woman anymore".

Almost 2000 children were separated from their families over a six-week period in April and May after Attorney-General Jeff Sessions announced the new "zero-tolerance" policy that refers all cases of illegal entry for criminal prosecution.

She also warned the minister, Horst Seehofer, against defying her, saying she is ultimately in charge of government policies.

Ms. Merkel reminded him that insubordination on a major policy matter violated the "chancellor principle" - the head of government determines the guidelines on government policies. According to the Emnid polling institute, if elections were held right now the grand coalition led by Merkel would still win 51 percent of the votes.

The survey found that 62 percent of respondents were in favor of turning back undocumented migrants at the border, in line with the stance of Seehofer who is openly challenging Merkel.

Seehofer himself announced the new low crime rate last month, concluding, "Germany has become safer".

Trump's claim on crime goes against crime figures in May that pointed to an overall decline in Germany over the past year. "Pleasure", added the broadcaster.

The Deutsche Welle website also noted that separate studies suggest that Iraqi and Syrian refugees in Germany are less likely to commit crimes out of fear for jeopardizing their chances of obtaining asylum.

Administration officials said they do not like the family separations either - calling it the result of legal loopholes - but insist migrants who arrive illegally simply won't be released or loosely kept track of.

Central and eastern European Union nations such as Hungary and Poland have either refused outright or resisted taking in refugees under an European Union quota system, and Austria has also taken an uncompromising stance. She would have to fire him, he would pull his party out of government, and Ms. Merkel would no longer have a majority in parliament.

The EASO said in an annual report Monday that just over 728,000 application requests were made for global protection in 2017, compared to nearly 1.3 million applications the previous year.
