Democrats, buoyed by President Donald Trump's poor approval ratings and a string of victories in special elections, hope to gain a majority in the 435-seat U.S. House of Representatives by flipping 23 seats this fall.

Votes are being tallied in Alabama, California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.

Linda and Doug Whisenant of Fresno, small business owners and registered Republicans, said California needs new leadership.

Menendez has promoted himself as a check on Trump, who lost to Democrat Hillary Clinton in New Jersey in the presidential election. Seven of these districts are in California, with the highest concentration in the longtime Republican outpost of Orange County. Ed Royce and Darrell Issa, and the district where Republican Dana Rohrabacher is facing challenges from the left and the right.

But Democrats may have gotten too excited about these pickup opportunities for their own good.

The answer will not only affect how Democrats who dominate Sacramento will steer the Golden State in the Trump era, but it could also carry significant weight in the battle for control of Congress this fall. The Golden State has a "direct primary", commonly known as a "jungle primary", which means the top two candidates will advance to the general election in November regardless of party. That allows the possibility of two candidates from the same party qualifying.

Whether Democrats will finally unite behind one candidate is the big question.

Facebook gave Apple, Microsoft and, er, BlackBerry 'deep access' to user data
Apple also showcased a new system that makes it more hard to gather information about users as they browse across the web. He stated that if a user does not want their data shared with a third-party company, all they have to do is opt-out.

Russian Federation ‘must be held to account’ for MH17: Australia
There are several legal routes and steps the Dutch and Australian governments could take - but none are going to be easy. Investigation officials, seeking to bring criminal charges, have not said who actually fired the missile.

Just how blue will California be after the dust settles from Tuesday's top-two primary?

State law prevents Republican Gov. Susana Martinez from seeking a consecutive third term. Jerry Brown in the statehouse, and Sen.

U.S. Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham has won the Democratic nomination for New Mexico governor and will take on Republican congressman Steve Pearce in November for the state's top job.

Across the country in Montclair, New Jersey, Lynnette Joy Baskinger, a psychotherapist, said she's fed up with the GOP. Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen of Huntington Beach and two Democrats, state Treasurer John Chiang, and Delaine Eastin, the former superintendent of public instruction, are all hoping those poll are spectacularly wrong. Hugin, a former Marine and Princeton University graduate, has promised to serve as an independent voice for Democrat-leaning New Jersey, where Trump is unpopular. Nate Boulton suspended his campaign after several women accused him of sexual misconduct.

Both Reynolds and Ivey are vying for their first full terms after succeeding men who resigned.

Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein won renomination, although it was unclear whether she'll face a Republican or a Democrat in November. Feinstein has responded to the challenge by tacking to the left, and leads de Leon in most polls. New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, a Democrat who faced federal bribery charges a year ago, did the same the same.

Democrats are also hopeful they won't get shut out in the race against Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA), whose ethics issues have made him potentially vulnerable.

Will More GOP House Members Struggle?

Antonio Villaraigosa, the former Los Angeles mayor who's now a Democratic gubernatorial candidate, called on the LA County registrar to keep the polls open longer. How Noem performs could show whether or not even being part of Congress is a kiss of death with GOP primary voters.
