World Press Freedom Day rally in Kathmandu

For the year 2017 Syria was the most unsafe country for media workers with 69 killed.

"Afghanistan's journalists are among the bravest in the world", said Omar Waraich, Amnesty International's deputy director for South Asia. We must all stand firmly behind journalists who are still doing their hard jobs in this stifling atmosphere of fear, threat, and intimidation. Many of them are close friends as well as colleagues who look out for one another as they work in an increasingly hostile environment.

In a release, MATT noted Reporters Without Borders or Reporters Sans Frontières (RSF), an worldwide non-profit organisation which promotes and defends freedom of information and freedom of the press, issued its 2018 World Press Freedom Index on April 25.

Afghanistan was past year ranked the third most risky country in the world for journalists by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). "This shaping and informative power mainly falls to the press and the media in general, under all their guises and through various mediums", she further stated.

"We firmly believe that the only check on power, is holding truth to its functions; its motives; and to ensure that justice served is truly and rightfully delivered".

The attack on the Afghan journalists comes amid increasing concerns over press freedom across Asia, including in the Philippines and Myanmar.

Although the day presents an opportunity to celebrate independent journalism and reflect on the challenges journalists and media institutions continue to face in the course of their work, there is need to build on the gains made and seek remedies for challenges. This celebration takes place in more than hundred nations. Therefore, the safety of journalists must be guaranteed, and press freedom must be strengthened.

Papua New Guinea ranks 53 among 180 countries on World Press Freedom Index in 2018.

The UNAMA documented 14 journalists killed in conflict-related incidents in 2017, and already has verified 11 killed and six injured during the first four months of 2018.
