After months of scrambling to tamp down controversy after controversy, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Tuesday kicked off the annual F8 developer conference by attempting to strike a positive note.

Facebook has admitted that up to 87 million users may have had their data hijacked by Cambridge Analytica, which worked for US President Donald Trump during his 2016 campaign.

Google and Apple allow users to permanently delete their browsing and search histories from its servers. There are many sessions for the developer community on how to apply Facebook's new developments in VR and AR.

While Facebook likely won't charge for their dating services, users will certainly "pay" by revealing even more of their personal data.

Facebook also made the surprise announcement that its portable VR headset - Oculus Go - would go on sale in the United States on Tuesday, priced $199 (£146). In an Oprah-style moment, he announced that all of the attendees would get a free $200 headset.

Alongside the tool Facebook explained: "Recently, we shared information about the potential misuse of your Facebook data by apps and websites. We're building a version of this for Facebook too", he wrote in a Facebook post. "It wouldn't have happened without him".

In January, Zuckerberg pledged he'd "fix" Facebook's biggest problems this year and said he was eager to solve major issues that plague the platform, including abuse and election interference.

Facebook is planning to add features focused on dating and forming "meaningful relationships", as it plans to take on online dating titans Match.com and Tinder. Once they've opted into the feature, a user can look through groups and events to find people they might be compatible with. "So let's say that your friend is testifying in Congress, for example", Zuckerberg said with a laugh. "We need to do more to keep people safe, and we will", but he added that Facebook's primary goal is to "bring people together".
