Weinstein faces sex charges amid #MeToo reckoning

"This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he could violate them sexually", prosecutor Joan Illuzzi told the judge.

Harvey Weinstein turned himself into the NYPD on Friday morning where he was charged with rape and other sex crimes.

Weinstein's spokesman Juda Engelmayer and his lawyer Benjamin Brafman both declined to comment to Reuters on Thursday on the charges.

Police in Los Angeles and London have also been investigating reports filed against Weinstein by multiple women. They were not reported to the police at the time these events occurred and I anticipate that the women who have made these allegations, when subjected to cross-examination - in the event we even get that far - that the charges will not be believed by 12 people, assuming we get 12 fair people, who are not consumed by the movement that seems to have overtaken this case.

Weinstein's attorney, Ben Brafman, released a statement to ET following the arraignment, which reads: "Mr. Weinstein has always maintained that he has never engaged in non-consensual sexual behavior with anyone". Monkey in 1999, told The New Yorker she was assaulted by Weinstein in 1997. The Hollywood producer left the Manhattan courthouse through a back door.

By agreeing to surrender, he had sped through the city's criminal justice system, where most people accused of rape spend hours in police stations and holding cells before going to court, and he arrived with a $1 million cashier's check for his pre-negotiated bail. A grand jury has been hearing evidence in the case for weeks. Asked "what can you say?" he mildly shook his head and softly said "no". "Weinstein just kept on, and later acted as if nothing had happened".

Weinstein lumbered into a police station early Friday wearing a blazer and carrying books including "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution", about the Broadway musical duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and "Elia Kazan", about the famed film director. The rape charge stems from an allegation by a woman who has not been publicly identified.

Our sources say the subpoena requested a wide array of items, which could include phone records, e-mails and financial records related to any services requested or provided to Weinstein, The Weinstein Company and other business owned by the disgraced movie producer.

He appeared in court later and was charged with assaulting Lucia Evans, who told investigators he forced her to perform oral sex on him in 2004.

"This is an emotional moment".

His arrest came months after Vance's office reportedly launched an investigation into allegations of sexual assault. "In December 2017, a team of New York Times reporters wrote an extensive piece, detailing Weinstein's "complicity machine" - the Hollywood producer's web of" silencers, spies, and enablers", as the NYT put it.

Weinstein was arraigned on the charges Friday. Brafman also has said that Weinstein was a "principal target" of an investigation being conducted by the US attorney's office in Manhattan. On Thursday, eight women accused Morgan Freeman of unwanted touching and harassment, which has caused Visa to suspend its marketing campaigns with the actor.

Mr Weinstein was sacked a year ago from his production firm, the Weinstein Company, which later filed for bankruptcy.

After talking and writing about the case for so long, including in a recent memoir, "Brave", McGowan, 44, said it came as a huge surprise when news of the legal case finally came.

Weinstein surrendered to police early Friday and is expected set to appear in court later in the day. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance had been under enormous public pressure to bring a criminal case against Weinstein.

A woman who claims she was a victim of Harvey Weinstein in two incidents in the 1990s said alleged survivors she's in touch with feel "elated" at his surrender and arrest Friday, but predicted he'll now "play hard and dirty".

The public allegations against Weinstein helped prompt a broad public outcry about sexual misconduct.
