Nasa will send helicopter to Mars to test otherworldly flight

They further informed that it took 4 years for the team to design, test and redesign the Marscopter that weighs in at little under four pounds (1.8 kilograms).

The idea was started in August 2013 as a technology development project.

NASA's next rover will carry the first helicopter ever to fly over the surface of another world, a press release from the space agency said on Friday. Its blades will spin almost 3,000 litres, approximately 10 times the rate employed by helicopters on the planet.

Double screw Mars Helicopter is able to rotate at a speed 10 times the speed of the earth's helicopters.

Mimi Aung, Mars Helicopter project manager at JPL, says that the altitude record for helicopter flight on Earth is around 40,000 feet.

"The real challenge is that the Martian atmosphere is very thin-about 1 percent of Earth's atmosphere-which means that it's not going to look like your typical drone in your backyard", Farley said.

The primary goal of the Mars 2020 rover is to investigate a to-be-determined ancient environment on Mars that could have hosted past or present-day bacterial life.

The Mar's helicopter carries twin blades, which whirls about ten times the blades of the aircraft on the Earth's surface. Controllers on the planet will control the helicopter to shoot its initial autonomous airport after its batteries have been charged and evaluations are all ran, NASA explained.

The team has been open in saying that they built their team to challenge the Warriors and now they'll get their chance. He was 32 for 67 with 15 3s in the series. "We're going to need some contributions from our bench", Kerr said.

Tony Bellew stops David Haye in fifth round of rematch
Both men were given the same £2.5m guarantee in their first fight, although Haye reportedly came away with a whopping £4.2m. Tony Bellew was out to prove his first win against David Haye was not a fluke and proved so in the grandest of ways.

It is planned that NASA would send another expedition to Mars in July 2020 - red planet the ship will reach in February 2021.

It also has solar cells to charge its lithium-ion batteries, and a heating mechanism so it can endure the cold Martian temperatures after dark.

"We have an autonomous capability that will be able to receive and interpret commands from the ground, and then fly the mission on its own", Aung said.

BBC notes that existing vehicles on Mars have been wheeled ones bound on the planet's surface, which is prone to running into obstacles. At a meeting of the National Academies' Space Studies Board May 3, Ken Farley, project scientist for Mars 2020, said he and others on the mission had concerns about flying that technology demonstration.

Testing whether "heavier than air vehicles" will work on Mars, NASA is looking to add to its long list of groundbreaking achievements.

If it is successful, it might pave the way for similar craft to act as low-flying scouts to help access parts of Mars not reachable by ground travel.

"The ability to see clearly what lies beyond the next hill is crucial for future explorers", said NASA's Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for the science mission directorate.
