Massive explosions on Syrian military bases registered as seismic activity

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reported that rockets struck targets in both Hama and Aleppo.

Missile strikes in Syria hit military bases used by Iran and its proxy militias, causing a blast large enough to shake the ground like a minor quake and killing at least 26 people, a conflict monitoring group said Monday.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the attack targeted a Syrian regime arms depot for surface-to-surface missiles.

It indicated that Israel may have been involved in the attack.

President Trump's recent military strike against Syria after the Assad regime's alleged use of chemical weapons was necessary, but not sufficient, says retired four-star general Jack Keane.

Israel has previously hit Iranian-backed militia outposts in Syria.

Some Syrian sources were quick to blame Israel, while the state-owned Tishreen news site said that the USA and Britain had launched the strikes, firing nine ballistic missiles from a military base in Jordan. Seven Iranian soldiers were among 14 military personnel killed in that attack.

Israel has not taken credit for the strikes in Syria, but Israel rarely takes credits for strikes within the country, though it maintains it will strike any Iranian activity within Syria that it deems a threat.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday said he has "proof" that Iran has a secret nuclear weapons programme that it "has been hiding for years from the global community in its secret atomic archive". But Amos Yadlin, a former head of Israeli military intelligence, said Israel was likely behind the strikes. "We are present in this country at the request of the government of Syria", said Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, spokesman for parliamentary national security and foreign policy commission.

Israel is yet to comment on the accusations, which come amid an escalating war of words with Iran.
