Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem, 2 days after USA move

Guatemala inaugurated its new embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday, two days after the US opened its embassy in the disputed holy city.

Following US foot prints Guatemala has now opened its embassy in Jerusalem on Wednesday.

Guatemala is the second country to open its embassy in Jerusalem after the United States.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the event, showering affection and praise on Morales for having the courage to take a stand that's so unpopular with the global community.

Guatemala's move follows protests this week that marked the 70th anniversary of the Nakba, when thousands of Palestinians fled from their homeland upon Israel's creation in 1948. Before 1980, Guatemala and a dozen countries maintained an embassy in Jerusalem.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed Morales and his delegation in Spanish with "Buenas Dias", which means good day in Spanish, before switching to English. Paraguay has said it will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem by the end of May. Israel's claim of the city being its capital was recently strengthened by United States relocating its embassy. Hundreds others have also been injured by Israeli gunfire.

Guatemala inaugurated its embassy in Jerusalem, the second country to move its main diplomatic mission from Tel Aviv. Since Guatemala has one of the highest percentages of evangelic Christians in the world, many of her countrymen will agree with her pro-Israeli sentiments. President Trump announced his decision on Jerusalem in December, triggering a joyous reaction from Netanyahu's government.
