Trump Teams Up With Qatar: Time to Consider QAT?

Mr. Trump made the remarks while hosting the emir of Qatar at the White House on Tuesday for meetings as he continues his US tour.

Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani on Monday visited the Pentagon and met with U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis to reaffirm and enhance the strategic security partnership between the two nations. Earlier this week, USA officials said the Trump administration was postponing until September a summit with Gulf Arab leaders that had been planned for May.

Al-Thani told reporters the region could not tolerate "a war criminal" like Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A lot of countries were funding terrorism and were stopping it.

The year-old regional crisis, marked by neighboring countries cutting air, sea and land links to Qatar, continues.

The Gulf emirate is a long-standing American military ally and host to the largest U.S. air base in the Middle East, but ties have been clouded by a crisis with its Arab neighbors.Led by United States allies Saudi Arabia and the UAE, Qatar's regional rivals launched a diplomatic and trade blockade previous year, and Trump initially appeared to take Riyadh's side. The UAE, meanwhile, would also build a nuclear waste site at the closest point near its border with Qatar.

The so-called Salwa Marine Canal project would be funded by Saudi and Emirati investors and dug by Egyptian companies with experience in the Suez Canal.
