Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney was forced into a primary election against Rep. Mike Kennedy in Utah's Senate race.

Romney, 71, who ran in opposition to Barack Obama for president in 2012, went up in opposition to 11 different candidates looking for the Utah's GOP nomination for U.S. Senate.

Romney needed at least 60 percent of the votes from delegates at the Utah GOP convention Saturday to head to the November election unopposed, but he earned only 49.12 percent, CNN and other media reported.

On the second round of voting, Utah state representative Mike Kennedy emerged in the lead with 50.88%.

The primary election will June 26, with ballots mailed to voters three weeks before election day.

Kennedy promised to "support President Trump" if sent to Washington, but also portrayed himself as an underdog against the "Romney machine".

Romney asked for delegates' votes after spending two months on the campaign trail visiting dairy farms, taking selfies with college students and making stump speeches in small towns. "Washington, D.C., is the Goliath" he said.

After his failed 2012 presidential campaign, he moved to Utah, where he gained popularity after running as the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major political party.

Trump fired back that Romney "choked like your pet dog" during their own WhiteHouse operate.
