The report shows the gap for women in Rhode Island and MA has widened.

Women under age 40 earned an average of $0.79 for each dollar earned by men in 2017, down from $0.82 in 2016.

That said, negotiation may not fix the structural problem, but for individual women, knowing how to do it-and really understanding your worth-can make a big financial difference.

The pay gap isn't the same for all women, either. "And that expectation really seems to be at the heart of the wage gap that exists in 2018". That gap is more pronounced for black and hispanic women, who earn $0.63 and $0.54, respectively, on the dollar of their white male colleagues.

By now, you might be feeling a little annoyed about this, but the worst part is that it sucks way more for women of color. The one thing that has not changed is this expectation that when couples have children, it is the women who are going to step back and take care of them.

Anti-wage secrecy laws, she says, are one of the most powerful tools in combating pay inequity because they can help workers know their real market value.
