Meanwhile, Syrians were bracing for a possible United States attack in retaliation for Saturday's alleged chemical assault in Douma.

Saturday's attack on the then rebel-held Damascus suburb of Ghouta reportedly left more than 40 people dead, and dramatically raised the stakes for outside powers.

Assad and Velayati criticised Western threats to carry out strikes on Syria in response to the alleged use of toxic weapons at the weekend, the presidency said.

France's Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday he had "proof" that the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had used chemical weapons, and would respond to it "in due course". On Tuesday, Macron said any French action would target Syria's chemical weapons abilities.

"The situation in Syria is horrific".

Germany is part of the US -led coalition against the Islamic State in the region, but will not participate in any strikes on the Assad regime, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a video statement on Thursday. "But also it's a very, very delicate circumstance and we've got to make this judgement on a very careful, very deliberate, very well thought-through basis".

Russian Federation and Syria have said there is no evidence that the alleged gas attack on Douma even took place, but at the White House, Sanders said, "the intelligence provided certainly paints a different picture, and the President holds Syria and Russian Federation responsible for this chemical weapons attack".

After inviting investigators to the country this week, state-run SANA quoted a foreign ministry official saying: "Syria is keen on cooperating with the OPCW to uncover the truth behind the allegations that some western sides have been advertising to justify their aggressive intentions".

Russian Federation is a major backer of the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the country's civil war, and strongly opposes the USA claim that Syrian government forces attacked a rebel-held town near Damascus on Saturday with chemical weapons.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria".

Assad, along with his Russian backers, warned again on Thursday that the threat of military action from the USA, "and any possible actions, will only contribute to further destabilization in the region".

World stocks edged down as anxious investors stayed wary of risky assets.

US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says the Pentagon is ready to provide options for a strike but notes the US and its allies are still assessing intelligence on the alleged strike.

Trump has consulted with U.S. allies, particularly France and the United Kingdom, about a coordinated response to the suspected chemical attack, but officials say they have not reached a firm agreement on scale or timing.

Wednesday's turmoil in Douma came during the evacuation of the latest batch of civilians and rebels after pro-government supporters attempted to raise government flags over buildings and chanted in support of Assad.

The U.S. and Russian Federation are shoring up defenses near Syria as tensions escalate after last weekend's alleged chemical attack there.

Any U.S. strike is likely to involve the navy, given the risk to aircraft from Russian and Syrian air defense systems.

Trump did not detail what a strike on Syria would look like, or whether these would be US missiles.

The U.S. stance on striking Syria is no clearer, even after President Trump tweeted that missiles "will be coming".

Russian Federation recently said reports of the chemical attacks are untrue and "bogus".

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone on Wednesday and urged him to do nothing to destabilize Syria.

"Never said when an attack on Syria would take place", Trump tweeted.

Trump had said on Monday to expect "major decisions" on Syria within the coming days.

"Germany will not take part in possible - there have not been any decisions yet, I want to stress that - military action", Merkel said after meeting Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen in Berlin.

Theresa May is planning to join the USA in taking military action in Syria without a vote in Parliament, according to a new report from the BBC.

"Chemical weapons have once again been used on Syrian men, women and children", Haley said, pointing out that it was only one year ago that she had held up pictures of dead Syrian children following a chemical attack that killed almost 100 people. "If Trump takes this step and Russian citizens are harmed, the reaction will be very harsh". That then deterred the US administration of Barack Obama from similar action. However, there is some evidence it was sprayed from helicopters, they said.

Later, he said: "We're having a number of meetings today, we'll see what happens".
