The 40-year-old Macron said Sunday that he has a "very special relationship" with Trump, suggesting they're political "mavericks" mutually committed to fighting terrorism and reducing the influence of rogue nations and dictators. He also expressed optimism that Trump in the coming days will exempt European countries from the global tariffs he intends to impose on aluminum and steel. Macron's office said Sunday he hopes it will be planted in the White House gardens.

"You don't make trade war with your allies", he repeated.

Macron told Fox News in an interview today he thinks the 2015 deal curbing Iran's nuclear ambitions is imperfect. "Let's see what he will decide on May first. I just say, where are your priorities?" He warned that Iran, which has been Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's most supportive ally, will overrun Syria if the countries exit too quickly. He pointed to this month's missile strikes against Syria as a victory for French diplomacy, but he failed to keep the U.S. in the Paris climate accord and his aides last week played down expectations that he might persuade Trump to change course on other issues.

Macron also cited the shared goal of reining in Iran as he argued for a long-term U.S. commitment in Syria - where Paris and Washington have cooperated in fighting the Islamic State group and coordinated strikes on Syrian regime chemical weapons installations.

"So I will give your President the oak, which is taken in a very symbolic, especially for your Marines in the North of France", promised the French leader.

"I'm not satisfied with the situation with Iran, said Macron."I want to fight against ballistic missiles".

He described the U.S.as "one of the last resorts" for peace and multilateralism.

Macron also said "I'm not the one to judge" Trump over current controversies or investigations. Macron and Merkel will both argue that unilateral moves on trade policy are destructive as they try to persuade Trump not to sabotage the World Trade Organization's rules-based trading system. A U.S. diplomat acknowledged that getting Trump to buy in will be the "trickiest" part of the problem.
