F1: Russia Wants the Grid Girls Back

Russian Federation wants to bring back the custom of so-called grid girls to Formula One, the organiser of the country's grand prix this year has said.

"Our girls are the most attractive", Kozak told Interfax.

Lewis Hamilton has backed the idea of bringing "grid girls" back to Formula One after the tradition was abandoned and replaced with the "grid kids" scheme earlier this year. There should be adults.

Many F1 fans believe the grid girls are a big part of the sport - and the organisers of one of F1's biggest races seem to agree with this viewpoint.

The decision by Liberty Media to end the use of grid girls was welcomed by equality campaigners who claimed women were being objectified.

For the record, Jalopnik's Alanis King was quick to point out that grid kids are supposedly supposed to be chosen from local motorsports clubs, so they should already be comfortable around cars. "They're pretty. The cameras will be on them once again".

In Russia also the girls will be present.

Dmitry Kozak, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister, says the Russian Grand Prix organization committee has engaged in discussions with Liberty Media to keep the women on the grid for next September's race in Sochi.

"Our American friends assume it hurts female feelings, but our hostesses go to modelling and PR schools and they're paid well".

When F1 made a decision to replace grid girls, I certainly didn't think it would end sexism in racing. They perform during the Grand Prix at events that are in line with their training.

And he even insisted that he will have glamorous women on the grid throughout the race weekend to look good in front of the global audience. Many are unlikely to be taken up.
