After a 91 Year Ban Pubs Open On Good Friday

Brian Conlon, landlord of Slattery's Bar, in the centre of Dublin, was one of the first to pull a legal pint at 7am. Drinking establishments are open and serving alcohol, thanks to recently legislation that overturned a ban in place since 1927 and took effect in the nick of time for thirsty locals and tourists.

The Vintners Federation of Ireland says the pub sector has lost out on 40 million euro because of the restriction.

Legally allowed to open on the annual Holy Day for the first time since 1927, some pubs however chose to stick with tradition by keeping doors closed on Good Friday.

Legislation was passed in the Dáil in January to amend the Intoxicating Liquor Act and end the 100-year ban on alcohol sales on Good Friday. Chief executive Padraig Cribben said "the Good Friday ban is from a different era and is rightfully consigned to history".
