Walmart expanding meal kits nationwide

The company says it will start selling prepared meal kits nationwide.

Walmart Inc. said Monday that meal kits will be in more than 2,000 of its stores this year, after starting the kits out at more than 250 stores initially. These meal kit programs often require subscriptions, since frequent purchases are needed to manage their business model.

It also takes aim at standalone meal kit providers like Blue Apron and Hellofresh, which have no brick-and-mortar partner to help alleviate the cost and complex delivery process associated with meal kits. What separates Walmart from the group is that it would not require a subscription.

Meal-kits are a $2.5 billion industry.

Walmart, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, has continued its battle with Amazon for shoppers. The retail giant also is re-outfitting a dozen Sam's Club stores into distribution centers for Walmart's online grocery business.

Only just recently, Amazon announced that it will be getting into the food delivery service as well, delivering groceries from Whole Foods through its Prime service.

In addition to the initial kits, Walmart.com will expand its offering to an assortment of meal delivery kits and other specialty food items like farm fresh crates and snack boxes.
