Thousands join 'March For Our Lives' across Bay Area

Survivors of last month's deadly school shooting in Parkland, Florida, are preparing to take their fight for stricter gun control laws to Washington.

It wasn't just about the march, as a number of speakers also took the stage.

The March For Our Lives rallies were sparked by a mass shooting in a high school in Parkland, Florida.

More than 800 demonstrations were set to take place in USA cities from Los Angeles to NY and in countries around the world, according to co-ordinators.

A crowd of almost 1,000 people marched through the rainy streets of Arcata today as part of the national "March for our Lives" protest against gun violence.

The march, which begins at Jack Poole Plaza at 10 a.m., is one of hundreds of similar marches happening across the United States and around the world.

Singer Jennifer Hudson said on Twitter she was "proud to stand with these courageous students" and appeared to confirm she would join marchers in Washington.

Josephina Davis, a 15-year-old from Boston, was seven when her brother, Johnny, was shot and killed.

"I'm lucky enough that both of my children are alive I think it's unfair that there are lots of parents including Parkland parents whose children can't be here today", said Bayerkohler.

While the bill passed Thursday by the Senate doesn't mention abortion, opponents say it would endanger women's right to choose. Family members became anxious about the family after they were supposed to return Wednesday from the trip but did not return.

But these rallies did not attract too many students even in some of the most liberal campuses in the USA.

"People who do want a military-style weapon should get a serious background check", Dave Stevens, of Philmont, said.

Furthermore, many Democratic and Republican lawmakers are supporting the massive protests against gun violence and have called the Trump administration to address the issue soon. Other gun-control protests around the country were also met with small counter-demonstrations. "This is more than just one day ... this is a movement", Parkland survivor Delaney Tarr, 17, told the crowd in Washington today.

Last month's Florida school massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, students rallied in cities across the country to demand tighter law against gun violence. "So we welcome you with open arms, but we cry for you as you enter". "Nothing can stand in the way of millions of voices calling for change", Obama wrote on the micro-blogging site.

Organizers say numerous rallies attracted thousands in support of legislation that would raise the age at which buyers can purchase some rifles and would improve and expand background checks.

Naomi Wadler took the stage with one message: Black females - who are killed in disproportionate numbers - have been left out of the gun violence conversation. "You can make a little less money and be able to look at yourself in the mirror with no blood on your hands", she said in Los Angeles. The funding measure also includes the Stop School Violence Act 2018 a measure passed by the House that provides grants for security training, metal detectors, stronger locks, emergency notifications, and other plans to improve school safety.
