Syed Ali Shah Geelani steps down as Tehreek-e-Hurriyat's chairman

Syed Ali Shah Geelani's long-time lieutenant Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai on Monday replaced him as chairperson of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, a constituent of the Hurriyat Conference, the Kashmir News Service reported.

A spokesman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat said Sehrai has been appointed as interim chairman of the party till organisational elections were held later this year.

However, the 89-year-old will continue to chair the hard-line faction of the Hurriyat Conference since he has been elected as life-time chairman of the separatist conglomerate.

In 2017, the NIA had filed a case against Geelani and other Hurriyat leaders for allegedly receiving money from the Lashkar-e-Taiba to fund subversive activities in Jammu and Kashmir. "So today I willfully step-down from the chairmanship and advise the Shoora to arrange an alternative at the earliest", he said.

Sehraie, then a member of Jamat, was instrumental in the formation of the new separatist outfit, say sources.

Matt McQuaid hits miracle shot to end first half
Still Syracuse has found ways to make it work this season, frequently winning games despite the possibility of being out-muscled. SU would have faced No. 2 Michigan State in that game if not for the Blue Raiders' monumental 90-81 first round upset.

Sehrai is Geelani's long-term aide.

Geelani had appealed to the people of Kashmir to boycott the 2014 J&K Legislative Assembly completely, not accepting the proposals for self-rule or autonomy that had been offered by the People's Democratic Party and National Conference.

Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Fantoosh was said to be the one in charge of party operations to a good extent.

Sehraie did not attend many executive council meetings of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and the Hurriyat as well. They are now detained in Tihar Jail in New Delhi. Geelani held the position for 18 years. Shooba-i-Talaba was renamed as Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (IJT) later on and the current framework of IJT has been designed by Sehraie himself in 2001.
